    Like most experienced psychotherapists in California, I don't take insurance directly. Clients are responsible for paying for each session in full at time of appointment. The cost of one 60-minute session is $200.00. Some clients choose to then file for reimbursement from their health insurance Out-of-Network plan. Clients who use Out-of-Network coverage for reimbursement tend to like this option over using in-plan providers because there is increased privacy in terms of who knows you are in therapy and what information is shared with your insurer. Another reason people choose to pay out of pocket or use their Out-of-Network plan is that the therapist is not constrained to only providing the type of therapy and amount of therapy allowed by insurers. This flexibility allows for highly personalized and quality care.

    If you are interested in seeking reimbursement from your insurance provider, here are the general steps:

    1. Call the Member Services phone number on the back of your health insurance card and ask to speak with a representative who can give you information on your Out-of-Network benefits.

    2. Ask the representative if you have Out-of-Network coverage for mental health services via telehealth and how much they reimburse for Psychotherapy.

    3. Ask what their process for submitting for reimbursement is. Most insurance companies have a straightforward procedure which is to upload a SuperBill to their website once a month. A SuperBill is a document that looks like an invoice that includes information such as how many sessions you’ve had, diagnosis code, psychotherapy code and the total fee.

    4. Receive your reimbursement.
